The University of Crete<\/a> and Prorata S.A<\/a>. welcome the 3rd and final Cure4Aqua Workshop on Operational Welfare Indicators for Gilthead Seabream, on the 11th of October 2024, in Athens, Greece.<\/p>\n

International experts from the scientific community, the aquaculture industry and competent authorities will discuss the outcome of the first workshop and the development of welfare indicators for Gilthead Seabream’s juveniles. This specific lab is a part of the 7th Work Package of the Cure4Aqua Project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"3rd\"\n\t

\n\t\tCure4Aqua project Overview\n\t<\/h3>\n\tFunded by the EU Horizon Europe programme, Cure4Aqua<\/strong> is a
\n\u20ac4.8 million, 4.5-year project that will develop new approaches to
\nprevent aquatic fish diseases by introducing and validating novel
\ntechnologies for early detection of diseases, while also supporting the
\nadvancement of alternative treatments to replace pharmaceuticals in
\ndisease control.
\nFarmed seafood<\/strong> is an important source of protein for food and
\nanimal feed, with a low-carbon footprint, essential to help build a
\nsustainable food system.
\nHowever, controlling pathogens continues to be a major challenge
\nfor the sector. This is particularly relevant for Europe, where there is
\na great variety of species and production systems, which hinders the
\nimplementation of good husbandry practices tailored to each aquatic
\nspecies.
\nCure4Aqua<\/strong> will develop new approaches to prevent aquatic fish
\ndiseases through technologies for early disease detection, while also
\nsupporting the advancement of alternative treatments to replace
\npharmaceuticals in disease control.\nTRAINING COURSES
\nThese courses will share and extend the skills and competences of
\naquatic health care actors<\/strong>, assessors, health professionals and other
\nrelevant stakeholders, providing internationally recognised certification
\nthat will improve the professional skills and competences of those
\nworking and being trained to work within the blue economy.\nRESULTS
\nThe results of this project will be made available through publications,
\nreports and open access data which will be added to the website as
\nthey become available.\nCOMMUNICATION
\nThe Cure4Aqua resources<\/strong> include factsheets, press releases,
\nnewsletters, infographics, podcast, training courses leaflets, blog and
\nproject videos. Resources will be added to the website as they become
\navailable.\nOUR PROJECT
\nOur project will contribute to the transformation of the European
\naquaculture industry, improving aquatic animal health<\/strong> and welfare
\nand supporting the environmentally friendly, inclusive, safe and<\/strong>
\nhealthy production of seafood.<\/strong>\nCure4Aqua<\/strong> consists of 8 work packages (WP), of which WP7 is about
\n“Evidence-based standards and tools to advance WELFARE on<\/strong>
\nfarms”<\/strong>. Its objectives are:
\n\u2794 To develop, optimize and validate a reliable, scalable, and easyto-
\nuse operational welfare score index, for farmed common
\ncarp, European sea bass<\/span>, gilthead sea bream, based on a set of
\nindicators that are (i) species-specific, (ii) life-cycle specific,<\/strong>
\n(iii) production system\/phase-specific, and (iv) fulfil the<\/strong>
\nwelfare needs of a given species.<\/strong>
\n\u2794 To develop and apply practical protocols and tools for welfare
\ncontrol, including the development of a “Quality of Life (QoL)<\/strong>
\nscaling system”<\/strong> for fish that enables selecting of appropriate
\nveterinary and behavior-monitoring interventions and defining
\nhumane endpoints to reduce suffering. Develop a prototype novel
\ndigital welfare assessment tool that incorporates machine learning
\nmethodologies and IoT applications.
\n\u2794 To assess and model the socio-economic and environmental
\nimpact of welfare assessment.
\n\u2794 To develop of protocols and scoring system for auditing and
\nassessment of biosecurity (including hygiene) at site and company
\nlevel with focus on European freshwater and Mediterranean
\naquaculture (bioexclusion and biocontainment). The use of the
\nprotocol and scoring system will lead to anonymized benchmarking
\nand identification of site-specific goals for targeted improvement.\n\t
